Friday, June 1, 2018, 10:30 to 2:30 pm
Instructor: Marybeth O'Halloran

Happily Scrappy is  series of workshops with prolific piecer Marybeth O'Halloran to help you sew down your scrap pile. Each session is a stand alone workshop, so sign up for one or two and register for them all - your choice. There will be plenty of tips, techniques and shortcuts for making easy components and blocks that you can sew in short spans of time, and before you know it, you’ll have a drawer full of finished tops.  Then the next time someone in your family — or a friend or a neighbor — needs a quilt, you’ll be ready! Each workshop will focus on a particular component and you can bring your scraps and sew along if you like.  Or if you’d like help with a project you’re already working on, bring that to sew on and I’ll get you going in the right direction.

For each session Marybeth will bring her die cutters and an assortment of dies that you’ll be welcome to use during class.  Marybeth has found that if she has a pile of precut pieces next to her sewing machine, she is much more liable to make best use of her limited piecing time — try this technique out and see how well it works for you, too! These workshops are wonderful for beginning quilters who have rotary cutting experience and have mastered an accurate 1/4" seam and more advanced quilters will enjoy Marybeth's clever ideas and proven techniques for putting your scrapbag to work!

June Session — Mary's Triangles

Scrap quilter extraordinaire Sally Schneider invented fun this sew-then-cut corner triangle technique while she was skiing with her friend Mary, so named them Mary’s triangles. Don’t let the ordinary name fool you — this is an easy but powerful technique that you can extend into all sorts of more complicated blocks like Kansas Troubles and Lady of the Lake — all without cutting hundreds of triangles first.  Sally did the introduction to the book Triangle Tricks and it’s a great pattern reference if you love this technique.

Components: half-square triangles, Mary’s triangles

Blocks: Birds in the Air, Sparkle Star, Kansas Troubles, Lady of the Lake

Quilt: Ocean Waves

Especially suited to: jelly rolls and scrap oddments
