Love the look of English paper piecing (EPP) but don’t have the time or energy for hand-sewing? Then give EPP by machine a try. First we’ll glue baste the fabric to the papers and then zig zag the pieces together with invisible poly thread. Then when the quilt top is complete we’ll pop the papers out— except for the edge pieces — and the design will be ready to applique onto the background, a step you can also do by machine! The Nova pattern by Tula Pink is a great introduction to the wonderful world of star shapes and pentagonal piecing and can be as scrappy or as controlled as you like. Feature your favorite large-scale prints on the large shapes, and fussy-cut your way to happiness if you like on the smaller pieces. The great news is you can change your mind at any time and combine hand and machine sewing to complete the wall-sized quilt top (56” square).
