Instructor: Marybeth O'Halloran
Happily Scrappy is series of workshops with prolific piecer Marybeth O'Halloran to help you sew down your scrap pile. Each session is a stand alone workshop, so sign up for one or two and register for them all - your choice. There will be plenty of tips, techniques and shortcuts for making easy components and blocks that you can sew in short spans of time, and before you know it, you’ll have a drawer full of finished tops. Then the next time someone in your family — or a friend or a neighbor — needs a quilt, you’ll be ready! Each workshop will focus on a particular component and you can bring your scraps and sew along if you like. Or if you’d like help with a project you’re already working on, bring that to sew on and I’ll get you going in the right direction.
For each session Marybeth will bring her die cutters and an assortment of dies that you’ll be welcome to use during class. Marybeth has found that if she has a pile of precut pieces next to her sewing machine, she is much more liable to make best use of her limited piecing time — try this technique out and see how well it works for you, too! These workshops are wonderful for beginning quilters who have rotary cutting experience and have mastered an accurate 1/4" seam and more advanced quilters will enjoy Marybeth's clever ideas and proven techniques for putting your scrapbag to work!
November Session — Curved Piecing
With so many beautiful traditional and modern patterns relying on curved piecing, it’s great to gain some skill and confidence at curved piecing so that you can try any pattern that appeals to you. Start with the improvisational curves of any of Sujata Shah’s patterns from her book Cultural Fusion Quilts to get a feel for how curved pieces behave. These forgiving patterns use a soft curve that’s then trimmed down to size before sewing blocks together and make it easy to master her style. Next you’ll be ready for the slightly firmer curves of Sew Kind of Wonderful patterns, and then, for more formal curves like drunkard’s path and NY Beauty with a minimum of pins and fuss. You’ll need your own copy of Sujata’s book to play with these patterns.
Components: simply curved rail fence, half-square triangle, or quarter-square triangle
Blocks: composed from any of the above
Quilts: rail fence, hourglass
Especially suited to: fat quarters and layer cakes
