Like the mystery quilt that we did last spring, the proceeds of the 2021 Mystery Quilt will be donated, this time to Fishline, which is our local community organization that uses its resources to assist our neighbors in all kinds of ways, including food, shelter, healthcare, and employment. You can see more about the organization on their website.
We will actually be able to donate 100% of the proceeds from the mystery quilt to Fishline due to Merry's generosity, as she has graciously waived her usual mystery quilt licensing fee as a donation to our endeavor!
This will be a twelve-month mystery and will be completely different from any mystery that we have done before! Participants can choose to make a crib, a twin, or a queen-sized quilt. Each month there will be various blocks to choose from, from blocks suited to less experienced quilters and even including blocks to satisfy the appliquers among us! There is even some advice on how to incorporate your orphan blocks as you go along.
I would call this a design-as-you-go or an improvisational mystery quilt, and no two quilts will look alike or be arranged in the same way. When we think of improvisational quilts, we think of the fabulous work of Rosie Lee Tompkins, Victoria Wolfe, or Maria Shell. However, the improvisational quilting process centers on making decisions about color and design as you go along. It does not necessarily mean quilting in a certain style, nor is it determined by whether or not you use a ruler or whether you utilize non-traditional elements. This mystery quilt is all about making design decisions each month as you add to your block stash and is also about the color choices you make each month, which means, unlike most mysteries - you are in charge!
Each month at the beginning of the month, participants will receive a newsletter that will include the month's block patterns. I will also show you how my quilt is coming along, and I will share a quilt or two with you from my collection of vintage and antique scrap quilts. The quilts might include one of the blocks featured in that month or perhaps have an improvisational design element for inspiration. The registration deadline is February 25th and the mystery begins March 1st.
