The Tree of Life design is inspired by a 15th-century textile fragment with a cypress tree motif. The Cypress tree motif originated as a Persian motif then made its way into ancient Roman and Greek art and became a symbol of mourning which continued into medieval art. In the Christian age, classical symbols of mourning came to be overlaid with connotations of the Resurrection because of the understanding that death is the path to new life. So, the traditional tree of mourning symbolizes both death and life, which is why this design is named the Tree of Life. It's a reminder that so much of life is intertwined--sorrow and joy, dark and light, death and life.
