Natural Indian mud resist dye hand block cotton fabric. The Dabu technique creates organic patterns on cotton fabric. A block is dipped in the mud paste mix, which consisits of mud, lime gum, wheat powder and water, is pressed onto the fabric. Sawdust is sprinkled over the fabric and the fabric is left in the sun to dry. The fabric is then dipped into the dye for coloring and again left in the sun to dry. The printing and dyeing process is repeated a necesary to give a unique design. The fabric is then washed and dried.
The Dabu technique relies on natural materials and hand printing so each piece has slight variations that are part of the appeal. The resulting cloth develops a beautiful patina over time as the naturally color-fast dyes gently fade. The resulting fabric is perfect for quilting, clothing and stitchery and heirloom garments.
